Pinel, Philippe
(1745-1826)
   physician
one of the pioneers of modern psychiatry, Philippe Pinel was born in Saint-André d'Alayrac, Tarn, and practiced medicine at the important hospitals of Bicêtre and Salpêtrière. The teacher of jean-éti-enne esquirol, he dedicated himself to the study of mental illnesses and had the great concept of abolishing the brutal therapeutic methods to which the mentally ill were subjected, and replacing them with humane and enlightened treatment. He recommended also that facilities for the mentally ill be changed from institutions to hospitals. Pinel's major writings include Nostalgie de la philosophie (1798-1818) and Traité medico-philosophique sur l'aliénation mentale ou la manie (1801), in which he classified mental illnesses into four categories: melancholy, mania, dementia, and idiocy. Pinel, a professor at the university of Paris, was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1803.
